Origin and history

The fountain of Amphitrite is a historical monument located in Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Place Joseph-Étienne installed, it was completely classified by ministerial decree on November 24, 2023. This classification covers the entire fountain, including its location on the non-cadastre public domain.

The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory, with an official address confirmed by the Merimée base. Marseille, the major port city of the Mediterranean, has always attached particular importance to its public spaces and their embellishment. The fountains, like that of Amphitrite, play an aesthetic and functional role, animating the squares and recalling the maritime history of the city.

Although the details of his creation or artist remain absent from available sources, his recent inscription as a historic monument underscores his heritage value to the commune and its inhabitants. This type of monument often reflects contemporary urban concerns, combining art, collective memory and spatial planning.
