Origin and history

The fountain of Ciboure, classified as a Historical Monument, dates from the seventeenth century and is distinguished by its unique architecture. It is composed of a straight stele surmounted by a capital adorned with the city's weapons, itself bent on a truncated pyramidal point. Water flows through two bronze beaks in the shape of a cannon, a remarkable detail that evokes craftsmanship and military influences of the time.

Listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 4 June 1925, this monumental fountain is today owned by the municipality of Ciboure. Its location at 1 Rue de la Fontaine makes it a central part of the local heritage. The accuracy of its location is considered "a priori satisfactory", and its current state reflects its historical and cultural importance to the region.

The monumental fountains of the seventeenth century, like the one of Ciboure, often played a practical and symbolic role in cities. They served as a water supply for the inhabitants while embodying the prestige and identity of the community. In the Basque Country, these works were also gathering places, strengthening social ties and collective life.
