Origin and history
The fountain of Place Sainte-Croix is a monument located in the historical centre of Metz, Lorraine (Great East). Built in 1734, it embodies 18th-century civil architecture in this city marked by its medieval and classical heritage. Its location in Place Sainte-Croix, a central place in the city, reflects its urban importance from its inception.
In 1770 the fountain was restored by the sculptor Rollier, a craftsman whose name remains associated with his history. Damaged during the French Revolution, it was later rehabilitated with a form modified from its original state. These transformations illustrate the political and artistic upheavals of the era, where many monuments suffered alterations or destruction.
Ranked as historic monuments by order of 13 June 1929, the fountain is now protected for its heritage value. Its preservation bears witness to the attention paid to the Messin heritage, in a region where water and fountains played a central role in everyday life and the beautification of public spaces. The fountain remains a symbol of Metz' collective memory, between Baroque heritage and revolutionary history.
