Origin and history

The Saint-Thiébaut Fountain is a historic monument located in Thann, Haut-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region. Built in the first half of the 16th century, it embodies the Renaissance architecture of the city. Its current location on the Church Square makes it a central element of the local heritage. The fountain was listed as a historical monument in 1934, highlighting its cultural and architectural importance.

The fountain was erected in 1549 by Hans Beltzli, master of Thann's college. Originally, it was equipped with a hexagonal basin, replaced in 1849 by a circular basin designed according to the plans of Poisat. The statue of Saint-Thiébaut, added around 1840, comes from the gate of the Rhine, illustrating the evolution and reuse of heritage over the centuries.

The building, owned by the commune, is a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. Its designation as historic monuments in 1934 allowed its preservation. Today, it remains a symbol of Alsatian identity and a major point of interest for Thann visitors.
