Origin and history

The Fountain of Tourves is a listed historical monument located in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Built in the 18th century, it is precisely the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, at the corner of Victor-Hugo Street. Its inscription as a historical monument dates from 24 February 1926, attesting to its heritage importance for the commune.

This type of fountain, typical of provençal villages, played a central role in the daily life of the inhabitants. In the 18th century, public fountains served as a gathering point for domestic activities such as water extraction, while being an architectural element in urban space. Their presence also reflected the social organization and municipal priorities of the time, where access to water was a major concern.

The location of this fountain, close to the town hall, highlights its integration into the administrative and social heart of Tourves. Available data indicate that it belongs to the municipality, which confirms its status as a public good. Despite the poor location accuracy (note 5/10), its official address and GPS coordinates allow it to be clearly located in the urban fabric.

The protection order of 1926 specifically covers the fountain itself, without mentioning any additional elements. This early classification (for the time) reflects a desire to preserve a vernacular heritage often threatened by the urban transformations of the twentieth century. Today, its status as a historical monument makes it a point of interest for visitors interested in Provencal civil architecture.
