Origin and history

La Fountain de Moussages, located in the Cantal department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is an 18th-century emblematic monument. It is distinguished by its octagonal basin and its cubic central barrel, adorned with sculptures in high relief depicting dolphins and mascarons in the shape of heads of leafy dolphins. Water flows from these decorative elements, adding a dynamic dimension to the work. The top of the barrel is crowned by a bearded human mask surrounded by foliage, giving the fountain a classic and symbolic aesthetic.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 20 October 1971, this fountain illustrates the importance of public water points in the French villages of the modern era. Dolphins, often associated with mythology and water protection, as well as plant motifs, reflect the artistic and cultural influences of the 18th century. The fountain, owned by the commune of Moussages, remains an architectural and historical testimony of this period, while serving as a landmark in the local landscape.

The structure of the fountain rests on a square base supporting the cubic barrel, whose corners are carved of dolphins whose only tails emerge from the water. The four mascarons, placed on each side of the barrel, represent stylized dolphin heads surrounded by foliage. These artistic details, combined with the geometric shape of the basin, highlight the know-how of the artisans of the period and the attention paid to the aesthetics of public works. The precise location of the fountain, near GPS coordinates 5079 Les Bouyges, makes it a central element of the Moussages heritage.
