Origin and history
La dread de la Franqui is a military construction located in the commune of Leucate, in the department of l'Aude, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 18th century, it was conceived as a fort of coastal surveillance, supplemented by two other forts today disappeared. Its architecture, rectangular in shape with rounded corners, evokes a Greek temple, with specific openings for observation and defense. It was also used as a flag to guide ships, although it was not a lighthouse itself.
The dread has marked defensive features: double-brassed cracks in cut stone gird the building, while two uneven doors open towards the sea, northeast. These doors provide access to a semicircular platform overlooking the cliff and shoreline, separated from the building by a wall and corridor. On the outside, this platform forms a slope with large slots, probably gun-burning. The top of the construction, in irregular apparatus, bears the traces of an old double slope roof.
Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 3 October 1967, the dread of the Franqui illustrates the coastal defence effort under the Ancien Régime. Its inscription demonstrates its heritage importance, both for its military role and for its distinctive architecture. Today, it remains an emblematic vestige of the Aude coast, linked to the maritime and strategic history of the region.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its dual use: coastal surveillance and navigational aid. Its exact address, 1006 C Carpy East in Leucate, and its Insee code (11202) confirm its territorial anchoring in the department of Aude, Occitanie. The accuracy of its location is assessed as very satisfactory, facilitating its geographical identification.
