The Cross (Box ZA 249): inscription by order of 15 June 1925
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Saint-Laurent-sur-Oust is an emblematic monument located in the cemetery of this municipality of Morbihan in Brittany. Dating from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its granite barrel carved in round shape, surmounted by a cross with arms adorned with lobed ribs. A profiled ring connects the cross to the barrel, while a recent base, covered with a granite slab, forms an altar. This monument, partially damaged (a redent of the cross is broken), illustrates the artisanal know-how of the period in monumental sculpture.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 15 June 1925, this cross reflects the importance of religious symbols in Breton public spaces during the Renaissance. Its architecture, both sober and elaborate, bears witness to local stylistic influences, mixing functionality (altar) and decoration (nervures, lobes). The more recent base suggests further restorations or adaptations to preserve or reinterpret its use.
The cross is located at the approximate address of 5157 Rue Greneuc, in the territory of the commune of Saint-Laurent-sur-Oust (code Insee 56224). Municipal property, it is protected for its heritage interest, although practical information about its visit or access is not detailed in available sources. Its state of conservation and its exact location (accuracy noted as "a priori satisfactory") make it a subject of study for art historians and regional archaeologists.
