Origin and history
The Iron Fountain, also known as the Saint-Firmin Fountain, has its origins in the 13th century, where a well-known iron source is already mentioned. However, its exploitation in the form of a medical fountain did not begin until the middle of the 16th century, when it took the name Saint-Firmin fountain. This site is at its peak in the 17th century, becoming a renowned place where major works are undertaken to beautify and develop.
In the 18th century, in 1759, access to the fountain was secured by an iron gate between two pillars, now extinct. The French Revolution dispersed its clientele, putting an end to its golden age. From the 17th century, a wooded walk, planted with trees and charmilles, led to the fountain. This alley, a place of popular gatherings, continues as a space of sociability until the last century.
The fountain is classified as Historic Monument by order of 27 October 1971, under the name Fountain of Iron (cadastre HT 287). Owned by the commune of Bourges, it is located at 7 rue de la Fontaine-de-Fer. Its history reflects both its therapeutic use, its social role and the urban transformations of the city over the centuries.
