Origin and history

Lomet Street Fountain, located at No. 4 in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne), has been a historic monument since March 2, 1992. It was built between 1808 and 1810 as part of a landscaping project initiated by the Baron of Empire Antoine-François Lomet (1759-1826), owner of the premises. Integrated into a cave dug in the masonry of the ancient medieval rampart, it evokes a nymphaeus with its two columns, its stone benches and its basins. Today, it is located in an corner of the parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lot-et-Garonne.

The layout of this fountain is in the style of the picturesque gardens of the early 19th century, mixing architecture and nature. The vaulted water drain duct and the presence of an adjacent well reinforce its nymphic character, a typical element of the romantic gardens of the time. Although the landscaped park envisaged by Baron Lomet was not entirely realized, this fountain remains the most significant vestige, illustrating the aesthetic and landscape ambitions of its sponsor.

The fountain is a rare example of this type of urban development in Aquitaine, combining medieval heritage (the rampart) and 19th century landscape creation. Its inscription in historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history linked to a local figure, Baron Lomet. Today, it offers a striking contrast between its aristocratic origin and its contemporary environment, marked by the parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce.
