Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Fultot is a sandstone monument erected in the seventeenth century, precisely in 1626, thanks to a gift from the "lords of the land of the altars". Located in the cemetery of the village of Fultot, Normandy, it is distinguished by its carved representations of Christ and the Virgin. This type of cross, typical of the funeral spaces of the time, served both as a religious symbol and a landmark for the local community.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 27 December 1913, this cross illustrates Norman funerary art of the early seventeenth century. Its material, sandstone, and iconographic motifs reflect the artistic and devotional practices of the period. The cross is now owned by the commune of Fultot, in the Seine-Maritime department, and remains a material testimony of local history and the piety of its former lords.
The monument is part of a rural context where cemetery crosses played a central role in religious and social life. They marked the sacred space of the cemetery, a gathering place for burials and prayers, while affirming the presence of the Church in the daily lives of the inhabitants. The precise dating of 1626 and the names of the donors, although partially anonymous ("lords of the land of the altars"), underline the importance of noble families in the religious patronage of the time.
