Gallo-Roman inscription placed at the base of the cross located on the public road: classification by decree of 8 January 1936

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman inscription of Seyssel is an archaeological vestige dated from the ancient period, more precisely from the Gallo-Roman period. Today it is placed at the base of a cross located on the public road, in the municipality of Seyssel (Haute-Savoie). The monument was classified by ministerial decree on January 8, 1936, recognizing its heritage and historical value. Its exact location at 48 Grande Rue remains approximated according to the available data, with a geolocalized accuracy assessed as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10).

The protection of this inscription is part of the broader framework of preserving the material traces of Romanization in Gaul. Gallo-Roman inscriptions, often engraved on stone, were used to commemorate events, honour local deities or characters, or mark public spaces. In Seyssel, as in other cities in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, these artifacts illustrate the cultural and political exchanges between the Gaulish and Roman Empire populations. Their subsequent integration into Christian monuments (such as this cross) also reflects the symbolic re-appropriation of these remains over the centuries.

Owned by the municipality, registration is now an element of the heritage accessible to the public, although the practical arrangements for visits (times, access) are not specified in the available sources. Its classification in 1936 underlines the importance attached, from the beginning of the twentieth century, to the preservation of the material testimonies of antiquity on French territory. The data come mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, supplemented by geolocalized and photographic information under Creative Commons license.
