Gallo-Roman rampart section on the edge of the Chambonas courtyard (cad. BR 110): classification by decree of 7 March 1979

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman rampart of Sens is a major architectural vestige of the ancient period in the region of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Located in the city of Sens, this monument reflects the strategic importance of the city in the Gallo-Roman era, where fortifications played a key role in defence and urban organization. The sections still visible today, like the one bordering the Chambonas course, offer an overview of construction techniques and Roman urban planning in Gaul.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 7 March 1979, this rampart is subject to specific protection for its section located in the BR 110 cadastre. Although the practical information on his visit remains limited, his official address, 28 rue Jossey, as well as an approximate location at 21 Boulevard du 14 juillet, allow to situate him in the current urban fabric. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note of 5/10), perhaps reflecting the challenges of preserving and locating ancient remains in urban areas.

The Sens region, integrated with the former Burgundy and today in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was an important crossroads during antiquity. The ramparts, like this one, served not only to protect the population from invasions or conflicts, but also to mark the prestige and power of the city. Their presence illustrates the Roman heritage in an area where cultural and commercial exchanges were intense, between local populations and Roman settlers.
