Origin and history
The remains of the Gallo-Roman villa of the Lower Empire, located in Mezin (Lot-et-Garonne), date from the late antiquity period. This site, registered as a Historical Monument by decree of 30 September 1991, illustrates the Roman rural settlement in the area of Aquitaine, now integrated into New Aquitaine. The protected elements correspond to the architectural and archaeological traces of a farm or aristocratic residence of that time.
The location of the site, reported as approximate (passible precision according to the Merimée base), is located on the road to Galin, close to the village of Mézin. The associated administrative address in the official registers is the Insee code 47167, attached to the department of Lot-et-Garonne and to the former Aquitaine region.
Gallo-Roman villas, like that of Mézin, played a central role in the economic and social organization of the countryside during the Lower Empire. They often served as agricultural production centres, residences for local elites, and trading venues. Their decline from the fifth century coincided with the political transformations and invasions that marked the end of antiquity in Gaul.
