Gallo-Roman vestiges (Case ZB 36, 37): inscription by order of 26 June 1980
Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman remains of Pierre-Buffière are an archaeological site located in the commune of Pierre-Buffière, Haute-Vienne (Nouveau-Aquitaine). These remains, dated from the Gallo-Roman period, illustrate the ancient occupation of this territory, although their exact function and detailed history remain partially documented. Their preservation led to an inscription under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 26 June 1980, stressing their heritage importance.
The location of the site, reported as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), corresponds to cadastral address ZB 36 and 37. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify the extent or exact nature of the remains (thermal, villa, public building...), their legal protection attests to their historical value. Code Insee 87119 links the site to the commune of Pierre-Buffière, in the former Limousin region, which is now part of New Aquitaine.
In the Gallo-Roman era, the region, then crossed by means of communication and marked by progressive Romanization, was home to rural and urban settlements. The remains of Pierre-Buffière are part of this wider context of settlement and cultural exchanges between local and Roman populations. Their study helps inform the lifestyles, architecture and social organization of this pivotal period.
Today, the site does not appear to be open to the visit systematically, and the practical information (times, access) is not detailed in the sources consulted. The Creative Commons license associated with a photograph of the site (credit: LucasD) suggests a documentary and tourist interest in this ancient heritage.
