Origin and history
The Modern Garage, located on Rue des Etrangers in Bordeaux, is an emblematic building of the first half of the 20th century, associated with the emerging automobile industry. Although its name evokes the company Tuar (active from 1913 to 1925 in Thouars), it is here a separate Bordeaux monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments in December 2021. This garage illustrates the development of mechanical and transport infrastructure during this period, in a dynamic port like Bordeaux. Its architecture reflects the functional needs of vehicle repair and storage workshops, typical of the industrial era.
The Modern Garage is closely linked to the port heritage of Bordeaux, as evidenced by its joint inscription with the two forms of refit of the river basins in February 2023. These elements, including locks, hangars and technical buildings, underline the strategic importance of the port in the local economy. The protection of the garage is part of a desire to preserve the physical traces of the industrial and logistical activities that shaped Bordeaux in the 20th century. Its exact address (20 rue des Etrangers) and its communal property status make it an accessible place, although information about its visit remains limited.
Unlike the Tuar de Thouars company — mentioned in some sources but not directly linked to this monument — the Bordeaux Modern Garage instead embodies the adaptation of port cities to new technologies. Its recent inscription (2021-2023) reflects a growing interest in industrial heritage, often neglected in favour of older monuments. No information confirms its current use (museum, cultural place, etc.), but its location in a historical area (close to the river basins) makes it a silent witness to the urban and economic evolution of Bordeaux.
