Origin and history
La Grande Chaloupe Train Station is a railway station located on the island of La Réunion, in the commune of Saint-Denis. Built in the second half of the 19th century, it belonged to the island's only railway line, mainly dedicated to the transport of sugar cane to port of embarkation. This rail network, which has now disappeared, played a key role in the local economy by facilitating the export of agricultural production.
The station site is located at the border of the municipalities of Saint-Denis and La Possession. The station itself, identified under the CH 74 cadastre, was registered as historical monuments by order of 22 October 1998. This classification reflects its heritage importance, although its initial use ceased with the disappearance of the railway network. The property now belongs to the Department of La Réunion.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historic role in the economic development of the island. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), corresponds to the following address: 15 La Grande Chaloupe, 97400 Saint-Denis. No information is provided on its current access to the public or its possible contemporary functions.
