Origin and history
La croix de Morterolles is a monumental cross located in the Haute-Vienne department, in the commune of Bessines-sur-Gartempe. It is located in the centre of the village square of Morterolles-sur-Semme, a former hamlet linked to the order of Saint John of Jerusalem. This stone monument, typical of crossroads or cemetery crosses, marks the religious and community importance of the place before the Revolution.
The cross dates from the 18th century, a period when Morterolles was a commandery and parish dependent on the order of St John of Jerusalem, integrated into the great priory of Auvergne. These commissions played a central role in the religious, military and agricultural organization of the region. The cross, symbol of faith and gathering, reflects the influence of order in local life.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 6 February 1926, the Cross of Morterolles is now protected for its heritage interest. It reflects the medieval and modern history of Upper Vienna, as well as the links between religious orders and rural communities. Its current location, on the public square (15 Place des Templiers), recalls its past use as a spiritual and social landmark.
