Origin and history

The buildings located Place du Général-Leclerc in Sainte-Menehould date from the 18th century. Their typical civil architecture of this period led to their protection by a decree of 27 February 1952, specifically covering facades and roofs. These buildings border a central square, reflecting urban planning and aesthetics of the city in the modern era.

The location of these buildings, in the department of Marne (Great East), is part of a historical context marked by the development of provincial cities under the Old Regime. Saint-Menehould, like other towns in the region, saw its economy based on crafts, local commerce and agriculture. Protected facades reflect the relative prosperity of the city and the importance attached to the beautification of public spaces.
