Origin and history
The building at the 15th of the Grande-Place in Arras is a historical monument whose 13th century facade and cellar were classified by ministerial decree. The façade was protected as early as 17 January 1920, while the cellar, dating from the 13th century, was classified a year later, on 16 December 1921. These protections testify to the heritage importance of this building, both for its architecture and for its medieval remains.
Arras, the emblematic city of Hauts-de-France, has had a rich urban history, marked by its commercial and political role since the Middle Ages. The buildings of the Grande-Place, like this one, reflect this lavish period when the city was a major economic crossroads. Medieval cellars, often used for storage or as living spaces, illustrate the architectural and social practices of the period, adapted to the needs of a growing population.
