Origin and history

The building located Place des Héros in Arras is a historical monument whose protection is specifically on the facade. This classification, carried out by decree of 1 September 1919, is part of a period of reconstruction and preservation of the heritage after the destruction of the First World War. The building, although little documented in the available sources, illustrates the attention paid to civil architecture in this city of Pas-de-Calais, marked by a rich urban and commercial past.

Arras, the capital of the department of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region, has always occupied a strategic and economic place in the north of France. The buildings in its city centre, often built between the Middle Ages and the early twentieth century, reflect the architectural and social evolutions of the region. This type of building, typical of public squares, was generally used as a place of residence, trade or craft, playing a central role in everyday life.

The protection of their facades, as is the case here, aims to preserve the collective memory and visual identity of the city, especially after the upheavals linked to world conflicts.
