Façade and Roof (Case 494): inscription by order of 30 April 1946

Origin and history

The building of Auvillar is part of a remarkable architectural complex around the triangular square of the hall. This site, with its arcade houses, perfectly illustrates the civil architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The hall and the surrounding facades form a coherent whole, typical of the market places of this time in Occitanie.

The square of Auvillar, centered on the grain hall, reflects the urban and economic organization of the villages of the region. The arcades were probably home to shops or storage spaces, while the hall served as an exchange place for local agricultural products. This set, classified as a Historic Monument in 1946 for its facades and roofs, reflects the importance of rural markets in community life.

The inclusion in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1946 helped to preserve the major architectural elements of this building, including its facade and roof. The location on the Place de la Halle-aux-Grains confirms its central role in the social and economic life of Auvillar. Today, this heritage offers an overview of urban planning and business practices of the 17th and 18th centuries in Gascony.
