Façade and roof (cad. 506): inscription by decree of 30 April 1946
Origin and history
The building of Auvillar is part of a remarkable architectural complex, centered around the triangular square and the grain hall. This site, characteristic of the gasconic architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries, illustrates the harmony between arcade houses and public space, reflecting the commercial and social uses of the period. The square, with its atypical form, is a rare testimony of the provincial urban planning of this period, where the halls served as an economic heart and a gathering place for markets and exchanges.
The façade and roof of this building, protected since 1946 by an inscription to the Historical Monuments, embody the local built heritage. Their preservation highlights the importance attached to this type of construction, both utility and aesthetic, in the urban landscape of Auvillar. The hall and the surrounding houses, with their arcades, formed a framework structuring for daily life, combining commercial, craft and community activities.
The location of the building, on the Place de la Halle-aux-Grains (now Place de la Halle), confirms its central role in the city's spatial organization. The available coordinates, although of an accuracy considered mediocre (level 5/10), allow to locate the monument in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. This heritage, still visible today, offers an overview of architectural traditions and lifestyles in Gascony during the 17th and 18th centuries.
