Façade and Roof (Box 602): inscription by order of 30 April 1946

Origin and history

The building in Auvillar, Tarn-et-Garonne, is part of a remarkable architectural complex of the 17th and 18th centuries. It integrates into the triangular square surrounding the hall, a typical example of the urban planning and gasconic architecture of that time. The arcade houses, characteristic of the region, form a harmonious framework around this central space, reflecting local constructive and social practices.

The Place de la Halle-aux-Grains, with its facades and roofs protected since 1946, embodies the civil heritage of the modern period. The inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines its importance as a testimony of the spatial and economic organization of Occitan villages. The arcades, often used to house shops or markets, illustrate the central role of these spaces in community life.

Auvillar, located in the former Midi-Pyrénées region (now Occitanie), was a place of exchange and gathering. The lobby and surrounding buildings provided a framework for business and administrative activities, reflecting a rural society structured around these key points. The architecture, both functional and aesthetic, met the needs of a predominantly agricultural and artisanal population.
