Origin and history

The building of Auvillar is part of a remarkable architectural complex, characteristic of the Gascon region of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It borders the triangular square surrounding the hall, an emblematic public space that reflects urban planning and local traditions of the time. The facades and roofs of this building, classified by decree of 30 April 1946, illustrate the civil architectural style of this period, marked by arcades and overall harmony.

The Place de la Halle-aux-Grains, where the building is located, is a typical example of the market places of the Old Regime in Occitanie. These spaces served as a forum for agricultural and artisanal products, playing a central role in the economic and social life of villages. The architecture of arcade houses, like that of this building, facilitated commercial activities while providing protection against the weather, characteristic of gasconic constructions.

The inscription of the façade and roof as part of the Historic Monuments in 1946 underscores the heritage value of this building. This protection aims to preserve a testimony of the urban and architectural history of Auvillar, where medieval and classical influences are mixed. The triangular plan of the square, rare and singular, reinforces the historical interest of this site, classified among the most representative ensembles of Gasconic architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
