Borne of the First Republic (No. 11): entry by decree of 6 November 1929
Origin and history
The Borne de la Première République d'Épinay-sur-Orge is an emblematic vestige of the French Revolution, located in the city centre, within the city park. This monument, dated from the 18th century, bears number 11 and is distinguished by a medallion decorated with a Phrygian cap, a strong symbol of this republican period. Its erection coincided with the First Republic (1792-1804), marking the local anchoring of revolutionary ideals.
The terminal was officially recognized for its heritage value as of November 6, 1929, when it was listed as historic monuments. Today, it is preserved in a public space, accessible to visitors, and bears witness to the political and social history of the Essonne. Its present location, in the garden of the town hall, highlights its role as collective memory for the commune.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its protected status and its precise location at the following address: 8 Rue de l'Eglise, 91360 Epinay-sur-Orge. The monument remains a rare example of the Republican pillars still visible in Île-de-France, illustrating the desire to mark the territory during the Revolution.
