Origin and history
The Bremond d'Ars hotel is a mansion located at 31 rue de l'Isle-d'Or in Cognac, Charente department. This building, whose 17th century carved door has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1973, features remarkable architectural elements such as canned pilasters, a full curved arch and a frieze decorated with interlaces. It served as a city hall for much of the 18th century, reflecting its importance in the municipal life of the time.
The door, a protected element, is framed by two ionic pilasters and surmounted by a pediment that is now extinct. The sculpted details, such as the foliage in the woodcuts and the palmette adorning the vault key, reflect the artistic style of the seventeenth century. The rue de l'Isle-d'Or, where the building is located, was traditionally inhabited by the most affluent families of Cognac, highlighting the prestige of this neighborhood.
Although the hotel is today a private property, its history is linked to both the municipal administration and the civil architecture of the region. The accuracy of its location is estimated as poor (level 5/10), and it is not specified if it is open to the public. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its heritage status and registration in the Merimée inventory.
