Origin and history
The building in Plampinet, in the commune of Nevache (Hautes-Alpes), is distinguished by its sundial, an artistic work by the painter Hippolyte Laurençon. This monument, although modest in appearance, was recognized for its heritage value, leading to the inscription of its sundial in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 1 September 1995. The protected element, located on the façade of the building, bears the cadastral reference E 1780.
The location of this monument, in the village of Nevache, is part of a mountain context typical of the Hautes-Alpes. The buildings in this region, often constructed of local materials such as stone or wood, reflect architecture adapted to the alpine climate. Solar dials, common in rural areas, served as both a practical tool for measuring time and a symbol of artisanal or artistic know-how. Plampinet's work, by its painted creation, bears witness to a particular attention to aesthetics, in addition to its utility function.
The artist Hippolyte Laurençon, author of the sundial, remains a little documented figure in the available sources, but his work in Nevache attests to his passage or his activity in the region. The sundials, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d的Azur as elsewhere, were often ordered by wealthy individuals or local communities to decorate public or private buildings. Their presence refers to a time when time was punctuating agricultural and artisanal life, and art was naturally integrated into everyday life.
