Origin and history
The building in Toulouse, on the alleys of President Roosevelt, is a neoclassical building built between 1824 and 1834. It is part of an urban beautification program to structure Wilson Square and its surroundings. Its facade, rhythmized by arcades and rectangular windows, is characteristic of the architectural style of the era, with details such as ground cornices and false baluster railings on the first floor.
The building was designed by architect Jacques-Pascal Virebent, then architect of the city of Toulouse. It is part of a set of 27 homogeneous buildings designed to harmonize public space around Wilson Square. This project is part of a municipal desire for modernization and beautification, reflecting the urban ambitions of the 19th century.
The facades and roofs of the building were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 20 August 1974, thus recognizing their heritage value. The building opens directly on the street and participates in the architectural coherence of this central district, marked by its urban history and successive transformations.
