Origin and history

This monument is a small corner house located in Montpellier, representing a typical example of the urban dwellings of the Middle Ages. Originally, it had a straight staircase serving a single floor, with shop windows on the ground floor and double-shaped windows to illuminate the accommodation. These elements reflect the mixed commercial and residential uses typical of medieval cities.

In the late 17th or early 18th century, the house underwent major changes. The right staircase was replaced by a screw staircase, more convenient to serve the levels, while the windows were replaced by "Italian" openings, marking the influence of modern architectural styles. These changes illustrate the adaptation of old housing to the new standards of comfort and aesthetics of the time.

The building was partially protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments in 1939, specifically covering the facades of the ground floor and the first floor. This recognition underlines its heritage interest as a witness to architectural developments between the Middle Ages and the modern era, in a preserved urban context such as Montpellier.
