Origin and history
The buildings at number 1 and number 3 on Rue du Loquet in Joigny (Yonne) constitute a remarkable architectural complex, dating back to the 15th century. Their particularity lies in the three carved poles, decorative elements typical of this period, which led to their inscription under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 29 October 1971. These poles, integrated with the facades of the two buildings, illustrate the craftsmanship and architectural style in vogue in the region at the end of the Middle Ages.
The location of these buildings in the historic centre of Joigny, a city marked by a rich medieval and reborn heritage, underlines their importance in the urban fabric. At that time, Joigny was a prosperous city, benefiting from its strategic position on the commercial axes of Burgundy. Buildings of this nature often served as housing for merchants or artisans, while reflecting the social status of their owners through decorative elements such as carved poles.
The protection of the poles carved in 1971 reflects the recognition of their heritage value. These elements, although partially preserved, provide an overview of wood or stone carving techniques used in the 15th century. Their preservation allows us to study the stylistic evolutions and artistic influences that have crossed Burgundy-Franche-Comté, a region where medieval civil architecture remains a precious but often unknown heritage.
