Origin and history

The Memorial of the Martyrs of the Deportation, located at the eastern tip of the island of the Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, is a tribute to the 200,000 deportees of France between 1941 and 1944. Sponsored by the Réseau du Souvenir and offered to the State in 1964, it was designed by architect Georges-Henri Pingusson and inaugurated on 12 April 1962 by General de Gaulle. Its architecture, deliberately austere, evokes the suffering of the deportees: a narrow staircase leads to a dark crypt where 200,000 glass sticks symbolize the victims, while a grave houses the remains of an unknown deportee transferred from the Struthof.

The crypt, which is weakly lit, houses ballot boxes containing land in the Nazi camps and ashes of crematory ovens. The walls bear quotes from authors such as Robert Desnos, Paul Éluard or Jean-Paul Sartre, reinforcing the poetic and memorial dimension. A fire towards the Seine symbolically isolates visitors from the outside world, creating an atmosphere of recollection. The memorial, classified as a historical monument in 2007, is one of the high points of national memory managed by the Ministry of Armed Forces.

Renovated in 2015 under the direction of architect Christophe Batard, the site preserved its raw character while improving accessibility. A new welcome and free guided tours are offered. Every last Sunday in April, a ceremony commemorates National Day of Remembrance of Deportation. The memorial, free of access, remains a place of transmission of history and reflection on Nazi crimes.

The building is distinguished by its hammered concrete inlaid with French gravel, evoking a natural stone. Its triangular shape and confined spaces aim to translate the oppression suffered by deportees. The upper rooms are home to a permanent exhibition, while the symbolic place — between the Seine and the sky — recalls both the absence of the disappeared and the hope of perpetual memory.
