Origin and history

The Secrétan house, located in Val-Sonnette (Jura), is a neoclassical house built in the first half of the 19th century. This historic monument was built in 1821 by Antoine Joseph Secrétan, colonel-major of the Imperial Guard of Napoleon I, after his military retreat. The building, backed by a slope, has a vaulted base to compensate for the elevation of the courtyard, as well as an Italian vestibule. One wing of commons extends the house, while the other is bordered by the nearby mill canal. The sloping park and tomb of Antoine Joseph Secrétan, decorated with obelisk and military symbols, complete this architectural ensemble.

Antoine Joseph Secrétan, born in 1773 in Grussia (Jura) and died in 1837 in his home, illustrated during the Napoleonic wars. Engaged as a volunteer during the French Revolution, he was decorated with the Legion of Honour in 1804 and became head of corps of the Voltigators of the Imperial Guard. Wounded at the Battle of Paris in 1814, he also participated in the Waterloo campaign in 1815. After the Restoration, he retired to this area, where he was buried. The house, classified as Historic Monument in 2008, bears witness to its military heritage and neo-classical architecture of the time.

The site also includes protected elements, such as the main buildings and the tomb, located in the En Rochelle district of Grussia. This place, now known as Val-Sonnette, reflects the local history and prestige of an officer of the Empire. Although the practical information on visits is limited, the residence remains a symbol of the Jurasian heritage and the Napoleonic heritage in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
