Origin and history

The Municipal Theatre of Denain, located in the city of the same name in the Hauts-de-France region, was built between 1901 and 1912. This project initially builds on the proposals of Mr Marquette, architect and inspector of fine arts in Paris, before being taken over by Louis Six, who ensures its realization. The building embodies the theatrical architecture of the first half of the twentieth century, with particular attention to interior decorations.

In 1911, Victor Lhomme, a painter from Lille, worked to decorate the showroom, notably by producing paintings of the ceiling tympanum as well as three oil panels on marouflage canvas for the foyer of the first galleries. The glass windows of the stairs and the gilding are the work of Pierre Turpin. These artistic elements contribute to the aesthetic richness of theatre, reflecting local know-how and regional influences.

Annexes were added in 1925 under the direction of architect Trannoy, thus completing the original set. The theatre, with the exception of its stage cage, and the facades and roofs of the adjoining premises, are listed as historical monuments by order of 18 October 2000. Owned by the commune of Denain, this cultural place remains a major testimony of the architectural and artistic heritage of the North of France.
