Origin and history
The present monument of Mont-sous-Vaudrey, bringing together town halls, schools, halls and gendarmerie barracks, was built after the fire of 1832 which destroyed the former town hall-school. The architect Besand designed this new ensemble between 1834 and 1835, incorporating a closed courtyard, doric-column side galleries, and an octagonal campanile. The main, rectangular building is organized around wings dedicated to the hall, school premises, and a stable for the gendarmerie, later renovated in kindergarten.
The architectural package reflects a desire to centralize public services after the disaster. The facades and roofs, as well as the cochères and the large staircase, were protected by a registration order in 2005. The sober style, marked by doric capitals and the symmetry of the galleries, illustrates the neoclassical influence of the period, while meeting the practical needs of a rural commune undergoing restructuring.
A communal property since its construction, this monument bears witness to the evolution of public infrastructure in the 19th century in Franche-Comté. Its functional plan, combining administrative, educational and security uses, reveals a pragmatic approach to local urban planning. The location on Jules-Grévy Street, in the heart of the village, highlights its central role in the daily lives of the inhabitants.
