Origin and history

Created in the 1960s, the municipal museum of Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine has its origin in the desire to gather a collection of art and local history. More than 1,500 works are preserved, covering various fields: paintings, sculptures, tapestries, engravings, drawings and ethnographic objects. These pieces illustrate both modern and contemporary art, as well as the Austrian heritage. The museum was established in 1965 in the castle of Saint-Ouen, restored for the occasion, becoming a place dedicated to the permanent presentation of the collections, punctuated by temporary exhibitions.

In 2002, the museum obtained the label "Musée de France", recognizing the national value of its collections. However, it closed to the public in 2005 for safety reasons. Despite this closure, works continue to be valued through travelling exhibitions, conferences and loans. The inventory has been enriched with photographs, and the launch of data on the Mona Lisa platform aims to facilitate access to this heritage.

The museum's collections are distinguished by major works such as drawings and prints by Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger or Marcel Gromaire, tapestries by Aubusson of the 20th century (after Jean Lurçat or Jean Picart Le Doux), as well as sculptures by Antoine Bourdelle or René Iché. Paintings by artists such as Édouard Pignon, Boris Taslitzky or Ladislas Kijno complete this ensemble, alongside objects bearing witness to the local history of Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine.
