Origin and history
The gendarmerie of Villeneuve-de-Berg is an iconic 18th-century building located in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, still present in the urban landscape of Villeneuve-de-Berg, bears witness to the civil architecture of this period, especially its wrought iron elements, characteristic of the buildings of the period.
The building was listed as historic monuments in 1931, an official recognition that protects two of its remarkable elements: the ramp and the wrought iron balcony. These inscriptions, made by separate decrees in February and June 1931, underline the heritage value of these works, representative of the artisanal know-how of the eighteenth century. The gendarmerie remains a symbol of local history and the evolution of public institutions in Ardèche.
Located at 19 Basse Rue Roger Vallos, this gendarmerie is part of a historical context where public buildings played a central role in the administrative and social organization of cities. In Villeneuve-de-Berg, as in other communes in the region, these buildings reflected the authority and presence of the state, while serving as a place of life and work for the gendarmes and their families. Their architecture, often sober but functional, was harmoniously integrated into the existing urban fabric.
