Gentilhommière, including the barn and entrance porch (Box C 220): inscription by order of 29 November 1976

Origin and history

The Nicelhommière de la Rie, located in Vellèches, New Aquitaine, was first mentioned in 1544. Its main home seems to have been built in the first half of the sixteenth century, reflecting the residential architecture of the era for noble or affluent families. This type of residence, often surrounded by agricultural land, played a central role in the local economic and social organization, serving both as a residence and as a place of management of the estates.

The property includes a barn dated 1643, showing an extension or renovation of agricultural buildings in the seventeenth century. A dovecote, once present on the site, was destroyed during the 20th century, illustrating the transformations and losses suffered by many rural settlements over the centuries. The genthommière, including its barn and entrance porch, was listed in the Historical Monuments Inventory by order of 29 November 1976, recognizing its heritage value.

The site is located in the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine, in the Department of Vienna. This region, marked by a rural and seigneurial history, had many noble gentilhommières and houses, often linked to the exploitation of land and the life of the surrounding peasant communities. These homes embodied local power and provided a framework for the daily life of rural elites, while participating in the regional agricultural economy.
