Origin and history

The Géo-Charles Museum was founded in 1982 in Échirolles, near Grenoble, thanks to the donation of Lucienne Géo-Charles, widow of the writer, journalist and collector Géo-Charles. Housed in an old Master's house belonging to the Société de la Viscose, it houses 143 works (paintings, sculptures, prints) from the first half of the 20th century, including pieces by Derain, Delaunay, Fernand Léger or Frans Masereel. These collections reflect the artistic circles frequented by Géo-Charles, with a recurring theme: sport as a subject of art.

Since 2021, the museum has been managed by TRACé (Territory of Resources, Arts and Culture Échirolles), a public institution that also administers the Viscose Museum and the Graphic Design Centre. The Géo-Charles Museum stands out as one of the first in France to explore the dialogue between sport and culture through permanent and temporary exhibitions. His fonds also included the personal archives of Géo-Charles, a poet who won the 1924 Olympic Games for his literary writings.

The building, located at 1 rue Géo-Charles, is labeled Musée de France. It offers commented tours and is served by bus line C7. The collections illustrate movements such as cubism, futurism or surrealism, offering an original approach to modern art through the prism of sport, a central passion of Geo-Charles, sportsman emeritus and committed columnist.
