Origin and history

The jails of the martyrs of the Resistance are located in the former barracks of Lauwe in Montpellier. This place, inscribed as Historic Monument by order of October 14, 2019, is a poignant testimony of the Second World War period. The jails, protected entirely, are located at 4 rue du 81e Régiment d'Infantry, in a building whose history is intimately linked to the French Resistance.

The Lauwe barracks, now extinct as a military entity, are home to these jails that recall the sacrifice of the resistors imprisoned during the occupation. The site is identified precisely in the Mérimée base, with coordinates associated with the city of Montpellier, in the Hérault department. Although the details of prisoners or specific events are missing, the inscription of the place underlines its memorial importance.

The location of the monument, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), makes it possible to situate these poles in a central area of Montpellier. The approximate address from GPS coordinates, 4 Rue de Nazareth, completes the available information. This place, now protected, invites us to reflect on the role of the Resistance in the Occitan region and on the material traces of this history.
