Iron cross forged in the cemetery: inscription by decree of 20 March 1929
Origin and history
La Croix du Bélieu is a wrought iron cross in the heart of the village of Bélieu, in the Doubs department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is located precisely in the cemetery, a typical location for this type of funerary or memorial. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments, effective since 20 March 1929, underscores its heritage importance and its representative character of local craftsmanship in ironwork.
The region of Franche-Comté, to which the Bélieu belongs, has long been marked by a strong Christian tradition, especially Catholic. Cemetery crosses, such as the Belieu Cross, served as both a religious symbol and a landmark for local communities. They were often erected in the 18th or 19th centuries, when villages structured their sacred space around the church and cemetery. These monuments also reflected local craftsmanship, such as the work of wrought iron, very present in this region.
The inscription of the cross as a historical monument in 1929 is part of a broader desire to preserve the French rural heritage. At that time, many religious objects and buildings, considered representative of local history, were protected to prevent their disappearance or degradation. The Cross du Bélieu, by its simplicity and material, illustrates this tendency to value modest but emblematic elements of the communal heritage.
