Gisement des Champs-Blancs or Jean-Blancs: by order of 11 March 1944
Origin and history
The Champs-Blancs deposit, also known as Jean-Blancs, is an archaeological site located in Bourniquel, Dordogne (24), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This monument is dated to the Upper Paleolithic, a period of Prehistory marked by major technological and artistic advances among hunter-gatherer populations. The site was officially recognized and protected by a classification under the Historical Monuments by order of 11 March 1944.
The location of the deposit is specified in the Merimée base with an address at Bourniquel, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10). This type of prehistoric site is crucial to understanding the ways of life, tools and cultural practices of humans of that time. Deposits such as the Champs-Blancs offer rare material testimonies, often linked to temporary or seasonal occupations by nomadic groups.
No additional information is available on the specific discoveries made on this site or on any archaeological excavations carried out. The 1944 ranking, however, underlines its heritage and scientific importance, guaranteeing its preservation for future studies. The Dordogne region, rich in caves and rock shelters, is a key territory for the study of Prehistory in Europe.
