Gisement en grotto de la Font-Bargeix (cad. AM 158): inscription by decree of 28 November 1989

Origin and history

The cave deposit of the Font-Bargeix, located in Mareuil in Périgord (Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), dates from the Upper Paleolithic period, more precisely from the Upper Magdalenian. This cavity served as a support for parietal works, including animal figures, female representations, and punctuations and symbolic signs. These artistic testimonies, typical of the end of Prehistory, illustrate the cultural and spiritual practices of the human groups of this time.

The cave was officially recognized for its archaeological importance, as evidenced by its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments by decree of 28 November 1989. The protected elements relate specifically to the deposit itself, identified under the cadastral reference AM 158. Although the precise location is approximate (noted 5/10 in terms of precision), the available data place the site on the territory of the commune of Champeaux-et-la-Chapelle-Pommier, now integrated in Mareuil in Périgord.

Available sources, including Monumentum, highlight the importance of this site for understanding Magdalenian parietal art in New Aquitaine. However, the practical information on the accessibility of the site (visits, services) is not specified in the data consulted. The cave is part of a wider network of prehistoric sites in the region, marked by a high density of remains dated from the Upper Paleolithic.
