Parcels containing remains of the Neolithic deposit of La Farguette, shown in the VA cadastre and bearing numbers 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14: inscription by order of 19 February 1992
Origin and history
The Neolithic deposit of La Farguette is a major archaeological site located in Cavanac, in the department of Aude (Occitanie). It covers about 100 hectares and is one of the largest hunting sites in France. Thousands of flint tools, as well as bone, stone and shell objects, were discovered on the surface. Air prospecting revealed more than 200 point indices, such as silos and pits, as well as several ditched enclosures.
The site is particularly rich in material vestiges, with about thirty reconstitutable hunting vessels. These discoveries attest to an intense human occupation during Neolithic, marked by artisanal and agricultural activities. The deposit was listed as historic monuments in 1990, and in 1992 specific protection was granted for the parcels containing the remains, identified in the cadastre as 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14.
The location of the site on a barred spur suggests a structured defensive or community organization. The imported flint tools indicate long-distance exchanges, characteristic of the Neolithic societies of this region. Today, the La Farguette estate remains a key place to understand the lifestyles and techniques of this period in Occitanie.
