The prehistoric cave of the deposit (Box A 473): inscription by order of 27 February 2007
Origin and history
The prehistoric deposit of Roc Pointu is an archaeological site located in the commune of Castels and Bézenac, Dordogne (New Aquitaine). This monument, dated from the Paleolithic, bears witness to an ancient human occupation in the region, although the precise details of its use or its occupants remain little documented in the available sources. The cave, a central element of the site, was officially recognized and protected by an inscription under the title of Historical Monuments on 27 February 2007, under the cadastral reference A 473.
During the Paleolithic period, local populations lived mainly in hunting, gathering and fishing, organized into small nomadic or semi-nomadic groups. Caves, such as Roc Pointu, often served as temporary shelters or seasonal places of life, while playing a role in the symbolic or artistic practices of that time. The Dordogne region, rich in prehistoric sites, offers a major archaeological context to understand lifestyles and human adaptations during this distant period.
