Origin and history

The Musterian prehistoric deposit of the Gane, located in Groléjac (Dordogne), is an archaeological vestige dated from the Middle and Upper Paleolithic. This site bears witness to the prehistoric human occupations in the region, with physical traces associated with the Mousterian culture, characteristic of the Neanderthals. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 19 July 1927, it is subject to specific protection for its scientific and heritage value.

The location of the site, although documented in the Merimée database (GPS coordinates and approximate address: 75 Grolejac, 24250 Groléjac), is considered to have a priori satisfactory accuracy (level 6/10). This relative impreciseness reflects the challenges of accurately identifying prehistoric deposits, often dispersed or buried. The site is referenced under the code Insee 24207, attached to the Dordogne department and to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (former Aquitaine).

No information is available from the sources consulted regarding public access, visits, or associated services (such as guest rooms). The 1927 ranking specifically covers Cadastral plots A 410 and 411 designated as protected. The data come mainly from the Monumentum database and internal archives, without reference to recent archaeological studies or detailed discoveries in the source text.
