Origin and history

The Glockenturm of Niedernai is a historical monument located in the Alsatian municipality of the same name, in the department of Bas-Rhin. This tower, whose origins date back to the 13th century, is the vestige of an old castle or defensive system integrated with the fortified belt of the Staedel (small town). It played a double role: tower of defense and bell tower for more than two centuries, as its German name Glockenturm indicates (turn of bells). The site has been protected as historic monuments since 1986, including the tower and two adjacent defence towers.

The fortification of the Staedel dates from 1284, initiated by the Landsberg family, local lords. The device included a enclosure, ditches, ramparts, and at least two doors (Staedeltor and Graffentor). The Glockenturm, possibly a dungeon, was defended by two towers and was part of a larger ensemble including the Landsberg Castle and, later (from the seventeenth century), a enclosure for the suburbs. Subsequent changes, especially in the 16th-17th centuries, strengthened these fortifications, although the precise details of these works remain partial.

Today, the Glockenturm is owned by the town of Niedernai. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified in the available sources, but its registration in 1986 underscores its heritage importance. The tower symbolizes the medieval and modern history of the region, marked by conflicts and architectural adaptations linked to the territorial defence in Alsace.
