Calvary (rests): by order of 25 August 1930
Origin and history
Vitry-en-Perthois Calvary, now reduced to remains, is a religious monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Marne (Great East). Ranked Historic Monument by order of 25 August 1930, it stands Public Square, a central location suggesting its past importance to the local community. Its exact location, marked as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), corresponds to address 2 Place de la Croix.
Calvary, typical of Christian heritage, often served as a place of devotion, assembly or visual landmark in villages. The one in Vitry-en-Perthois, although partially disappeared, illustrates the religious and cultural anchoring of the small rural communes of the Greater East. These monuments also reflected the social and spiritual practices of the populations, marked by processions or collective prayers.
Their preservation, as here by an official classification, underscores their historical and symbolic value for successive generations.
