Origin and history

Le Grand Mas de Saint-Étienne-du-Grès is an emblematic Provencal mansion located in the commune of the same name in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument, whose origins date back to the 16th century, illustrates Renaissance architecture with a facade decorated with a turret. It underwent transformations in the 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting the stylistic and functional evolutions of these epochs.

The facades, roofs and bread oven of the kitchen were listed as historic monuments on August 5, 1980, marking a first recognition of their heritage value. This protection was extended on 8 July 2020 to include the entire estate: entrance, roads, courtyard, gardens, guardian's house, the old cellar, as well as leisure wood and agricultural plots, including olive groves. Finally, the interiors of the Grand Mas were inscribed by an order of 14 November 2024, consolidating the preservation of this heritage.

The estate, located on Avenue Frédéric Mistral, embodies the rural and seigneurial history of Provence. Its old access road, now integrated into the local road, as well as its ancillary buildings such as the cellar and the caretaker's house, testify to an agricultural and residential organization typical of the large provencal mas. These elements, combined with the architectural richness of the mansion, make it a major site to understand the evolution of rural habitats in Provence.

The gradual inclusion of the various parts of the Grand Mas reflects a desire to preserve not only the building, but also its landscaped and functional environment. Olive groves and wooded areas recall the economic importance of agriculture in this region, while recently protected interiors offer an overview of lifestyles and domestic developments throughout the centuries.
