Origin and history

The Grand site naturel de Ploumanac'h is a village in the commune of Perros-Guirec, in the Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany. This site is famous for its granite massif, a "centered complex" formed by the successive intrusion of three magmatic bodies, offering remarkable petrographic and structural diversity. The cutting of the shoreline and the numerous granite islands make it a privileged place of study for geologists, often compared to an "open-air museum". The granite chaos of the Pointe du Château du Diable is protected by the Conservatoire du littoral.

The village of Ploumanac'h, whose name means "the pond of the monk" in Breton, is linked to the legend of Saint Guirec, a monk who would have landed on its coasts in the 7th century. An 11th century oratory on Saint-Guirec Beach commemorates this event. The site also houses historical monuments such as the Milin Ru tidal mill, built in 1833 and used to produce ice in the 19th century, as well as the Mean Ruz lighthouse, rebuilt in 1945 after its destruction in 1944.

Ploumanac'h is also an active marine living place, with a protected natural harbour, created in 1883 to facilitate communications between ships and land. Today, it has 250 buoy seats and 150 ground seats, and serves as a starting point for tourist shuttles to the Sept-Îles. The customs trail, which runs along the coast, attracts more than 800,000 visitors a year, making this site a high place for Breton tourism. In 2015, Ploumanac'h was elected "French favourite village", and in 2022, an application for UNESCO World Heritage was launched.

The site is marked by a rich artistic and cultural history. Painters such as Henri Rivière, André-Léon Vivrel and Georges Sabbagh stayed and immortalized his landscapes. The chapel of Saint Guirec, built in the 16th century and enlarged in the 18th and 20th centuries, houses notable religious works, including a 15th century cross Christ and a 16th century Pietà. Local events, such as the feast of old riggings and the forgiveness of Saint-Guirec, perpetuate Breton traditions.

On the geological level, Ploumanac'h offers a unique setting with rocks dated up to 2 billion years, such as icartian orthogneiss visible at Pors Rolland. The variety of formations, including dolerite veins and magmatic enclaves, makes it a site of major scientific interest. The Coastal Conservatory manages several areas, such as the tip of Skewell, where the preservation of flora and landscapes is a priority in the face of the tourist influx.

Finally, Ploumanac'h is an example of symbiosis between natural and human heritage. Its temperate ocean climate, its emblematic beaches such as the Saint-Guirec and the Bastille, and its infrastructures such as the lighthouse or tidal mills illustrate a history shaped by the sea, stone and men. The UNESCO classification project underlines the universal importance of this site, both geological, historical and cultural.
